Self-efficacy is believing that you can perform a certain task, a belief that you can succeed while performing certain functions (Seifert, 2004). On the other hand, a person who does not possess a certain ability will avoid performing that task unless there are assurances they will succeed. In example, a person who is not great at reading will avoid reading “out-loud” in a classroom, whereas someone who has that skill will perform that function. Self-esteem is the belief; often good, one has about their own abilities (Vazir & Raza, 2009). In example, I know I can play basketball. I may not be as good as I was 25 years ago, but I know I play better than most my age. Self-efficacy and self-esteem are both beliefs, however one allows a person to complete a skill they know they possess (self-efficacy) and the other is an over-all belief; or opinion, concerning an individual’s general abilities (self-esteem).

One example as to when self-esteem may be misinterpreted as self-efficacy occurs when “a person who has a history of failure and fails a test may make a different attribution (such as inability) than a student who has a history of success and fails a test (such as lack of study)” (Seifert, 2004, p. 138). Even though Seifert mentions a lack of study, that student may, erringly, have felt they did not have to study (self-efficacy concerning their cognitive ability) due to the good grades they have received the past quarter. The self-efficacy led to an overall feeling of self-esteem, in which the student’s sense of judgement contributed to their failure in this instance. Seifert (2004) mentions this as a part of the Attribution Theory in his article.

Seifert (2004) also makes mention of the Self-Worth theory. This self-worth speaks of one’s own viewpoint regarding their value and abilities. This sounds very similar to a personal belief concerning personal abilities, a la self-esteem. A high level of self-worth may cause one to feel narcissistic about themselves and a low level of self-worth may cause one to experience depression. Vazir and Raza (2009) discuss esteem building in children when children experience a high level of self-esteem and a low-level of self-esteem due to various circumstances. The two authors state parents are to reassure the children that they are loved and accepted regardless of the situation. However, parents have a duty to be honest with their children about the child’s efficacy rather than give the child false information that will cause a shallow level of esteem that will shatter upon the next failure.

Efficacy is acknowledgement of an ability, which can be a building block to developing other abilities. Self-efficacy can be something as simple as believing “If I achieved this, then with proper guidance and instruction, I can achieve something else. Even something, which at the outset, may appear to be difficult”. Esteem, on the other hand, may cause a person to have a false sense competence. This false sense of competence, quite possibly over the course of time, lead to one’s failure.

you made some good points concerning the application of self-efficacy theory. I believe that Bandura’s (1977) self-efficacy theory has relevance to many applied problems. You made a good point about practical instances. Hakeem (2001) found in a business statistics class in which there was an active learning project there were higher scores, on the average, on one of two exams than in a business statistics class without the active learning project. However, it is possible that the two classes differed in other ways. Nonetheless, one of the possible interpretations of the finding is that the increased performance was due to an increase in self-efficacy. Experiential learning might increase self-efficacy. However, there may be other possible interpretations of the finding.
