General Requirements

Your paper will be evaluated based on comprehension, structure (esp. clarity of thesis), argumentation, style and presentation, appropriate critical analysis and informative use of the readings, and creative independent research.

1. Your paper should develop your own unique argument. Good papers will be written and

clearly constructed. I should have no trouble picking out your thesis statement nor understanding why your paragraphs appear when they do.

2. Your paper must indicate how the various

ethical issues we have considered throughout the quarter

(e.g., abortion, death penalty, environmental ethics etc.)

bear on your topic. In other words, by considering or rejecting any one/several of these various ethical positions or moral standings in your argument and providing reasons for the same, you will be able to shed light on the issue you are discussing or the position you are taking on it. If a particular article/author’s position from our reading has bearing on your topic, please explain what the article/the author says about your topic and explain your response to it. Thus, good papers will make excellent useof the texts we have read in class. A wise rule of thumb is to have at least two citations

-quotations or paraphrases from the course text. You should be able to draw not only from the readings, but also from class discussions, movies/videos, and lectures if and wherever appropriate.

3. In addition to referring to course text, you are required to use at least two outside philosophical readings for your paper. For example, you can use

philosophical articles from our course text that has not been assigned for the course, or you can use our library search engine to find articles from academic journals or books. If you are writing on a topic that is not covered on our reading schedule, you will have to do more library work. I suggest you use journals such as the

Journal of Medical Ethics, Journal of Business Ethics, American Journal of Bioethics,Environmental Ethics,Philosophy and Public Affairs,Food Ethics

, etc.

If you are having trouble finding something relevant to your topic, I can help you with that. (Please contact me during my office hours or write to me using Canvas email if you need further guidance on how to use library resources for your research paper). Please do not let outside research overwhelm you. The purpose of doing outside reading is only to help stimulate your own thinking regarding your topic. However, your paper must include such articles/chapters in book as well as a brief discussion of how you use it in your research. Please use proper citation of academic journals/books in your paper (only academic journals and books, online or in print. No website citations, Wikipedia etc. will be accepted).

Superior papers will accomplish one or more of the following goals:*

a.Explore the topic in some depth instead of painting a broad picture.

b.Attempt to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the positions discussed.

c. Show familiarity with the differing critical interpretations of the author/sin question (as wediscuss in class). In other words, provide an understanding and evaluate relevant arguments, debates, and/or interpretations in a manner that demonstrate your independent thought .d. Argue a position and present some sort of conclusion.

*Please don’t waste my time with rhetorical flourish and fancy introductions (e.g. “Ever since the beginning of time, man has debated about …”) that doesn’t get anywhere. It is better to start with a solid thesis statement (such as “In this paper I will argue that…”) rather than fancy, wordy introductions.

5. The papers should be 7-8 double -spaced typed pages (use Times New Roman 12 point font).

Please note that word count fewer than 1700 words or more than 1900 words (excluding title, bibliography, footnotes and headers/footers if any) will result in a failing grade of “F”.

6. Please use page numbers , word count, and staple your pages together. Unstapled papers will not be accepted.

7. A late paper would not be accepted (see late assignment policy in the Syllabus). Research papers submitted after due date will earn a failing grade of “F”.

8. Your paper should be formatted using a professional style. Please use the

Chicago Turabian Style guidelines for proper in -text citations, footnotes if any, and bibliographical/works cited page entries. Consult TLC or Purdue University’s online writing lab: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/ owl/ for specifics on citation. Papers must include a bibliography/works cited page.

9. No papers will even qualify for an A unless they are reasonably free of grammatical and

spelling errors as well as ill – formed, wordy sentences. Make sure you consult the recommended text (Lewis Vaughn’s Writing Philosophy on Canvas course content page) for helpful tips on how to write a philosophical essay.
